A Visit From An Author.

Adele Broadbent
Room 22 were really lucky to have Adele Broadbent come into our class after our Friday assembly. We asked her questions like how she got her inspiration and why she chose to write.
We also got her autograph.
She came into our classroom because we are reading Just Jack, the book she wrote that is set in Hastings. It was great to find out that she used the life of her grandfather - who was a jockey, as inspiration for the book.

She was very inspiring.

Just Jack by Ben and Bronson

Ben and Bronson made an awesome pic collage about our current novel Just Jack.

Cross country

We had a great turn out at cross country on Tuesday, with every one bouncing up and down with joy or nerves. But the adrenalin sure kicked in, we had the amazing Year 5&6 non champions then Year 3,4 champs and non champs and as soon as we knew it, it was the Year 5 girls and boys which was really cool. we had yellow in the lead then blue.
And as soon as I knew it, my race had come.

We were all shattered at the end.

Fun with Fractions

Today we revised our knowledge about fractions.
Where would two thirds be on our piece of string? What about a half?

Start thinking about and looking out for fabulous fractions.

If you enjoyed the challenges give the problems we didn't get done a try. Mum or Dad may like to try as well or help you. We haven't had time for Maths Millionaire so you could try this.

The Great Waldini

Today mrs Chatfield had organised a magician to come to school and show us some 'magic' tricks. Is it science or is it magic? That is our science learning this term. Today's show really made us question how Waldini did those tricks.
Your thoughts?

Inquiry Topic Term Three

This term our Inquiry topic is

As a community how do we understand and care for our environment?
We certainly thought carefully about our marine environment last term so we will need to think hard about where we want this learning to take us this term. Thinking caps on - we will discuss this and start some questions this week. Have a chat at home and see how your family interprets and wonders about this question.

Exciting Week Ahead

What an exciting week ahead. We are starting the Readathon and I know this will be fantastic fun. Get those books out! What fun - read, read and read!

We also have Maths Week and will be doing lots of the challenges on the Maths Week website. Congratulations to all those clever hard working children who have progressed on our tables and division challenges. Great to see all the hard work going in to learning these. If you want to find more practise opportunities remember Studyladder and NZ Maths Family page. (http://nzmaths.co.nz/families). Both of these are great sites.

A pack of cards is also a great way to learn tables or even smarten up on division skills. Put down two, add them up and divide by a third card. Yes you will probably have a remainder. Give it a go!

Getting Ready for Readathon

We know that we are going to read many books in the next few weeks and will be needing some good recommendations, so we are going to write 'book blurbs' to entice readers. Today we had to read the blurb on the back of our book and decide in groups what does actually make a good blurb. Here are our thoughts.
